It\u2019s getting harder to tell<\/em> (August 29), I remember as a junior writer some 10 years ago, being screamed at by a well-meaning editor for not knowing the difference between a hyphen, an en dash and an em dash. I took the lashing as a badge of honour and was proud that I learnt something that my non-writer friends didn\u2019t know. I silently gasped when a hyphen was used in place of an em dash, as it so often was in pre-AI days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So imagine my horror to see AI-generated em dashes everywhere. Worse still, using them these days makes people automatically suspect that it\u2019s AI-written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Really, what\u2019s a writer to do?
