Addressing this disparity is critical to the uptake of EVs, and a fair transition for those without the luxury of off-street charging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further deployment of EV infrastructure should drive down costs and support accessibility, particularly with healthy competition between charge point operators. However, more innovation is needed to support affordable charging: clean electricity is part of the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as we\u2019re seeing with the rollout of smart tariffs in homes, lower wholesale energy prices could be passed on to drivers at public plug-ins. As renewables make up more of our energy mix, motorists could align charging to the times when electricity is at its cleanest and most abundant \u2014 lowering costs and supporting the grid. Early results from a trial we\u2019re running indicate that price matters; consumers are responding when the cost of public charging falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EVs have become a battleground topic on Britain\u2019s road to net zero. Those with the most to lose \u2014 who have a stake in keeping petrol cars on the streets \u2014 will continue to shout the loudest.
