\u201cDespite what some headlines may have you believe, the UK\u2019s automotive transition is moving at speed, with electric vehicles making up a record one-in-four new cars sold this November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But if EVs are to become the norm, the 40 per cent of the public without driveways will need access to affordable charging stations\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Public charging costs sit at approximately 10 times the rate of private plug-ins, without factoring in the distance some may have to travel to find a usable charge point. Addressing this disparity is critical to the uptake of EVs, and a fair transition for those without the luxury of off-street charging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Further deployment of EV infrastructure should drive down costs and support accessibility, particularly with healthy competition between charge point operators. However, more innovation is needed to support affordable charging: clean electricity is part of the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just as we\u2019re seeing with the rollout of smart tariffs in homes, lower wholesale energy prices could be passed on to drivers at public plug-ins. As renewables make up more of our energy mix, motorists could align charging to the times when electricity is at its cleanest and most abundant \u2014 lowering costs and supporting the grid. Early results from a trial we\u2019re running indicate that price matters; consumers are responding when the cost of public charging falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
EVs have become a battleground topic on Britain\u2019s road to net zero. Those with the most to lose \u2014 who have a stake in keeping petrol cars on the streets \u2014 will continue to shout the loudest. But for 80 per cent of new cars in 2030 to be electric, their material benefits need to be clear to the next wave of consumers, not just early adopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the UK can deliver EVs as a cheap, convenient alternative, and communicate their merits effectively, then the public will follow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
