Too fast to adjust: Adoption speed and the permanent cost of AI transitions

Most debate about AI and jobs still starts with the automation frontier: how many tasks machines can eventually perform. This column argues that is the right place to start, but not the whole problem. The next big labour shock may come less from new technological breakthroughs than from the race between retraining capacity and the – still incipient – adoption of tools that are already out there.
