“… While the benefit to customers could be huge, for governments I would think the technology would be very useful. The idea of introducing personal taxation based on consumption, or on other criteria could be revolutionary. A digital pound could automatically tax the better off a higher amount for a cup of coffee than the disadvantaged or the poor, who could be charged much less.
Additionally, and more worryingly, a government could limit goods being sold to its citizens with existing health issues to avoid future problems. Imagine being at the checkout and told that one cannot have certain items due to having already bought several of the same items in the last month.
