Ιατρική φροντίδα και το καλοδεχούμενο ‘νοσηρό κόστος Baumol’         

Αντιγράφω επιστολή αναγνώστη (γιατρού-γενικού παθολόγου) με τίτλο “Doctors will always play role of empathetic listener”, που δημοσιεύθηκε στην Φαϊνάνσιαλ Τάιμς της 23 Σεπτεμβρίου 2024. Το νοσηρό κόστος Baumol –ο William Baumol το περιέγραψε το 1960– αναφέρεται στην τάση αύξησης των μισθών σε κλάδους ή επαγγέλματα στους οποίους δεν καταγράφεται αύξηση της παραγωγικότητας, ωστόσο οι μισθοί αυξάνονται ένεκα της αύξησης των μισθών σε κλάδους και επαγγέλματα με υψηλή παραγωγικότητα. 

“I am a GP [General Practitioner] and was concerned to read Dame DeAnne Julius’s suggestion (‘Investment is wasted without public sector productivity reform’, Letters, September 17) that we should replace expensive labour with the use of technology. British general practice, with its emphasis on continuity of care and treating the whole patient, has up to now provided a very efficient and cost effective primary healthcare system compared to other countries in the world.

I would point your readers to the words of Dr Helen Salisbury, who writing in this week’s British Medical Journal, said: ‘In that moment when there seems we have little to offer in the face of suffering and the solution is beyond the scope of our medicine, the only thing we have left is to listen. We should not underestimate the power of making a space in which the patient can examine and explore problems — talking out loud, without interruption, to an empathetic listener.’

The appropriate use of technology in medicine will help us care for our patients but it may not necessarily lead to a reduction in costs or better patient care.”
